Background of the Study
Ethnic conflicts pose significant challenges to national stability and social cohesion, necessitating effective mediation techniques to foster peace and reconciliation. The African Union (AU) has emerged as a key actor in mediating ethnic disputes across the continent, utilizing a range of diplomatic and negotiation strategies to resolve conflicts. In Abuja, the AU’s interventions have provided a platform for dialogue among conflicting ethnic groups, aiming to address historical grievances and promote inclusive governance (Mbadiwe, 2023). Mediation techniques employed by the AU include shuttle diplomacy, confidence-building measures, and the establishment of transitional frameworks that enable power-sharing. These approaches are designed to reduce tensions and create an environment conducive to long-term peace. However, the complexity of ethnic conflicts, with deep-rooted socio-cultural and political dimensions, often challenges the efficacy of mediation efforts. The study examines the effectiveness of international mediation techniques in resolving ethnic conflicts, focusing on AU interventions in Abuja. It critically assesses the mechanisms through which mediation facilitates conflict resolution and identifies factors that influence the success of such interventions (Okafor, 2024; Dlamini, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite numerous mediation efforts by the AU, ethnic conflicts in Abuja persist due to entrenched mistrust, divergent political interests, and socio-cultural divides. The mediation techniques employed have had mixed results, with some interventions failing to address underlying issues that fuel discord. The challenge lies in creating sustainable peace agreements that reconcile historical grievances and promote equitable power distribution. This study seeks to investigate the limitations of current mediation techniques and explore potential strategies for enhancing their effectiveness (Mbadiwe, 2023; Dlamini, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of AU mediation techniques in resolving ethnic conflicts in Abuja.
To identify key factors that hinder successful mediation outcomes.
To propose strategies for improving international mediation efforts.
Research questions

What are the main obstacles to successful mediation in ethnic conflicts?
What improvements can be made to enhance mediation outcomes?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth appraisal of international mediation techniques in resolving ethnic conflicts. By focusing on AU interventions in Abuja, the research offers critical insights for policymakers and mediators seeking to develop more effective strategies for sustainable peace and conflict resolution (Okafor, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating international mediation techniques as applied by the AU in resolving ethnic conflicts in Abuja. It does not extend to mediation efforts in other regions or contexts.
